The book is written for a beginning elementary, one-semester or one-quarter course in complex analysis, typically attended by a mixture of undergraduate mathematics students and both undergraduate and graduate physics and engineering students. The exposition and arrangement are intended to make the book usable for minimally prepared students (a good background in elementary calculus suffices). However, more discriminating students will find that the discussion of each topic treated is logically complete. We have not strived for mathematical elegance or complete generality, but rather we have attempted to be simple, direct, and useful. Most concepts introduced appear in various contexts throughout the book, not as isolated topics
